I made a failure taking leadership when I was the manager of the class’s shop in my university’s school festival. Because the festival is held in May every year, it is relatively difficult to build a strong trust relationship between each other (we first met in April), so only half of them helped me to operate the shop. Due to lack of people, it was too hard to divide roles and sell mini-castellas so we recorded a deficit in the first day (shifted to selling lemonade and somehow turned it into a surplus). I learned how difficult and important it is to build strong trust relationships between members of the organization you are aiming to take leadership in. I noticed talents are very important resources, so before you try to take leadership, you must be relied by those talents. It seems such an obvious conclusion, but it means different whether you actually experienced a difficulty according to it or not, so I am confident that I recognize the importance more than other people. As aforementioned, when I served the reader of the training travel to Uganda of the students’ organization. I failed to forge the member of this organization. In the first place, the member of the organization about international generally tend to have each purposes to join that organization. This is the most different point from the club activity in high school, especially sport club. In almost all case, the members of sports club practice to win the game, but the purposes of the members of international club is very various, for example, to have relationships with foreign people, to support developing countries, and so on. Therefore, I was puzzled. Members didn’t follow my instructions. Finally, we finished our travel without accident, but that’s just lucky and the satisfaction of this travel is not so good because the purpose of it is not integrated. To integrated the purpose was naturally completed, but now, it’s not natural. From that experience, I learned that it’s the most important to integrate the purpose when I plan to do something. Through my experience of learning Chinese as a beginner, I discovered the real reason why cooperating with others is important for success. I started learning Chinese language since my freshman year, taking Chinese courses. I never doubted I was a good learner and continued to study by my own way for one full year. It was not before I visited mainland China for the first time that I realized my listening and speaking ability were still in a very low level. I noticed that I was not viewing myself from an objective point of view and came up with plans to solve the issue. That was, making some Chinese friends studying in Japan teach me Chinese and I, in return, teach them Japanese. When we visited Hong Kong University last summer, I made them hear me sing famous Japanese karaoke songs, and they taught me popular Chinese dramas. As a result, both of our language ability improved rapidly. 私の強みは、人の立場になって物事を考えられるという点です。私は大学入学から約3年間、学習塾の非常勤講師を勤め、中学受験、高校受験、大学受験を控える生徒を担当していました。私自身、中学受験や大学受験の際に学習塾に通っていたため、当時は生徒の視点から、塾講師に対して、課題の量やタイミングなど要望する点がありました。この実体験を踏まえて、私は塾講師として生徒の私生活や学校とのバランスを考え、生徒とコミュニケーションをとりながら、生徒の1週間の予定や学校行事などを考慮して課題や小テストの質や量を提案しました。生徒自身の立場から考えることで、生徒と講師の間で信頼関係を構築することができ、生徒の成績をあげることにも成功しました。このように、自分と他者のお互いにとって最適な選択をするためには、行動を起こす前に相手の立場や気持ちを考えることで重要であり、この点が私の強みであると考えています。 続きを読む

私は、大学での研究にて挫折を経験しました。競争の激しい分野で、過去に先輩が扱っていないチャレンジングなテーマが与えられるため、いかに成功に結び付けるかが大きな課題でした。しかし、高いモチベーションを持ち、十分に時間をかけていたのにも関わらず半年近く全く成果が出ませんでした。その原因として、過去の論文ばかりを頼っていたことが挙げられます。論文には主に成功例が記載されており、新規性の高い課題の失敗要因の解析にはあまり役立たず、その点が疎かになっていました。そこで、最新の知識を幅広く有する先生方や先輩から客観的な意見をもらい、自分の実験の失敗要因を粘り強く追及しました。その結果、少しずつ壁を乗り越えていくことができ、数え切れない失敗のもとにようやく一つの成果が生まれ、米国での学会発表の機会を得るまでに至りました。この経験から、「失敗の要因を突き詰めること」「成功事例にとらわれないこと」の重要さを学びました。 続きを読む

I have found the ways to overcome discouragement. In my study, the theme I chose was a difficult one anyone ever tried before. Although spending so much time, I never obtained good results. The cause of discouragement was that I had depended on published research papers too much. Those papers only contain successful experiments. They didn’t help clarify why my experiments went wrong. So, I decided to concentrate on specifying the failure factors only. I discussed problems repeatedly with other members who gave me opinions. I have overcome with countless failures and finally reached a good result which I will present at a conference in US this fall. I have learned through my experience that it is important to focus on negative aspects so that failure could turn into success. 続きを読む

My biggest failure is the loss of the prize in the intercollegiate competition when I was a junior in college. I have belonged the windsurfing club for four years in college. In windsurfing competitions, players compete with the speed and tactics by using the power of wind. I practiced very hard every day in Lake Biwa toward the goal to win a prize, but I lost the prize in the third year. From the failure, I saw the conventional way to practice in a new light and improved it better. For instance, I brought in muscle trainings in order to supplement the muscle I was lacking. As a result, I took second place at the national college windsurfing championship in the fourth year. Through the biggest failure in my life at age 18, I experienced first hand that “effort and preparation need to be 120%”. Until I decided to apply for a 2-year exchange program in France, I spent all of my high school days with absolutely no interaction with English. I realized my lack of awareness and thus completely changed my lifestyle to wake up at 5 everyday and dedicate my mornings to study English. With years of my continuous effort, I eventually achieved the goal of getting a score for IELTS high enough to apply. However, I did not make the selection. This was simply because others made more effort than I did. This experience changed me in a way that I do not hesitate to sacrifice anything to archive a goal. When I was a high school student, I studied hard to enter University of Tokyo. For instance, in third year’s summer vacation, I studied for 10 hours a day. After summer vacation, I also studied for about 5 hours a day even though I went to school. However, I couldn’t avoid giving up entering University of Tokyo. After this frustration, I noticed why I couldn’t enter University of Tokyo. There was only one reason. That was because students who entered University of Tokyo have studied a little harder than me. They probably studied for 10.5 a day in summer vacation and for 5.5 hours a day during the term. Therefore, I can say with confidence that I can do anything if I make efforts to extremes because of this frustration. Now, I’m improving myself as hard as impossible to fulfill next dreams. 続きを読む

After summer vacation, I also studied for about 5 hours a day even though I went to school. However, I couldn’t avoid giving up entering University of Tokyo. After this frustration, I noticed why I couldn’t enter University of Tokyo. There was only one reason. That was because students who entered University of Tokyo have studied a little harder than me. They probably studied for 10.5 a day in summer vacation and for 5.5 hours a day during the term. Sales in Malaysia during freshman summer vacation when I was not fluent in English. Forming a team with three classmates of my friends, we spread into four countries in SE Asia and did sales with the aim of obtaining internships in local companies. I played a role of accelerator; became a First Penguin, achieved results first, kept improving strategies and actions and show obstacles which I had overcome beforehand. I accomplished 3 or 4 meetings per day for 5 weeks, even it took 2 hours to travel there one way. At night, I studied a local rules and laws related to VISA, since we took charge of sending people to the country as well. Though my living environment was terrible, no internet, no air-conditioner, no hot water and sharing a room with 7 nationalities, I achieved my goal. 続きを読む

I served as sub-delegate of the international student support group at Keio University. The majority of our members were unenthusiastic about the supportive activities we provided. Attendance rates were often very low and I experienced many hardships in the organizing and planning of activities and event. I hypothesized that we were not meeting the exact needs of our particular members and conducted interviews on all of them. After obtaining what kind of activities and support the members sought through us, I addressed the reform of our organization. The result was the reinforced commitment of the majority of our members and the dramatic increase in attendance rate of our activities.
